Jodhpur RIFF 2011 in collaboration with Blue Frog hosted Rajasthan Night featuring some of the best performers from Sarangiya Langa community of Rajasthan. The evening experienced the magic and vibrancy of some popular songs and music performed by this amazing community.  and Kasam Khan Langa. This year Jodhpur RIFF festival will 
take place from 12 - 16 October 2011.

 

The Langa are one of the better known traditional folk singers and musician communities of the desert state of Rajasthan. Both the Surnaiya Langa (who play the Surnai, an aerophonic instrument) and the Sarangiya Langa perform on special occasions for the ‘Sindhi Sipahi’ community, who has been their traditional patrons for centuries. Till today, the Langa receive remuneration in the form of cash and kind from their patrons; camel or cattle are highly valued gifts. The Langa are also the traditional genealogists (in oral form) for their patron’s families. 


The Sarangiya Langa are well known for reciting and singing a variety of poetic styles, traditionally to the accompaniment of the chordophonic ‘Sarangi’ – a string intrument played with a bow.It is incredible that in spite of rural poverty and the influence of media, some among the Langa community have managed to retain their traditional verve and charm and continue to stay connected at

About the Main Artists:


Nek Mohammad Langa – 50yrs old – Vocalist – Nek Mohammad learn t this art from his Guru Rahmat Khan Langa. He has been singing for the past 30 years and has attended many festivals in India and internationally. A few festivals in which he has participated in India include ‘Saptak’, ‘Apna Utsav’, ‘Jaipur Heritage International Festival’, and ‘Jodhpur RIFF’. He has traveled internationally to Russia, Paris, Germany, America, Belgium, Japan and Singapore to perform at Festivals.

Mubarak Langa – 42yrs old – Vocalist – Mubarak has learned the art from his Guru Hyatt Mohammad Langa. He has been singing and performing for the past 27years. A few festivals in which he has participated in India include ‘Saptak’, ‘Apna Utsav’, ‘Jaipur Heritage International Festival’, and ‘Jodhpur RIFF’. He has traveled internationally to America, Dubai, Kenya, Japan, Australia and Singapore to perform at Festivals.

Kasam Khan Langa – 25yrs old – Dholak player – Kasam learned to play the Dholak from his Guru Nek Mohammad Langa. He has been playing Dholak since the age of 10yrs. He has performed at festivals in Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Kolkata. He has also performed at international festivals in Australia and Paris.
